Ⅱ. Project Overview
○ Memory of Architecture
During the 1930s and 1940s, when the Art Deco style was popular in the ASEAN region, early capitalist economic systems were developing, cities were rapidly expanding, and mass culture was emerging. As a result, various public buildings, such as markets, theaters, hospitals, and halls, were constructed to accommodate large populations and serve public functions. Over time, these architectural structures have been repurposed in response to significant social changes, including shifts in imperial power, wars and independence movements, capital relocations, and economic development in the 1970s and 1980s. This chapter intriguingly traces the turbulent modern history of Southeast Asia through the lens of surviving Art Deco architecture.

○ Building Cultural Identity through Architecture
After World War II, during the period of independence and transition to nation-states in the ASEAN region, various architectural experiments were conducted as Southeast Asian countries sought to reinterpret their own traditions and environmental conditions within the broader trends of international modernism. While some of these efforts were led by outstanding architects who had studied abroad, there also existed architectural forms that vividly reflected the aesthetics of the general public, who adapted flexibly to socio-economic changes. This chapter explores examples of state-led modernist architecture, as well as grassroots modernist trends seen in shophouses and tube houses, alongside innovative projects by young architects who contribute to a richer urban landscape experience.

○ Architecture for All
The value of architecture is constantly changing. Unlike other privately owned assets, its benefits are not limited to the owner alone. Even those who have no direct connection to the building can become participants in its appreciation. Architecture can be rediscovered with new value at any time by various stakeholders, including local residents, visitors, administrators, and heirs. This chapter sheds light on the perspectives of different individuals who engage with architecture, reflecting on its enduring social significance and the ways it can share value across time.
